PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand the different types and classes of locomotives and each ones capability and limitations as well as their various components in each locomotive and their function. Learners will also be able to explain the different instrumentation and control handles.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Differentiating between various types of locomotives.
  • Identifying the various systems of the locomotives.
  • Explaining the instrumentation of locomotives.
  • Explaining the purpose of locomotive control handles.

    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competence in:

    Locomotive may include but is not limited to diesel electric, diesel hydraulic, electric locomotive, electric motor-coach, loco truck and electric multiple unit.

    Differentiate between various types of locomotives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different types and classes of locomotives are identified and described according to the full range of locomotives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The differences between the different locomotives are described in terms of their layout and functions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The capacities and limitations of the locomotives are explained to indicate and identify the context in which they can be used. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify the various systems of the locomotives. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Systems refer to but are not limited to hydraulic systems, cooling systems, compressed air system and vacuum operated system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different components in each system are described in terms of their contribution to the operation of the locomotive. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose of each component is described in relation to the relevant system. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The inter-relatedness of the systems are described in terms of how they work together to contribute to the holistic operation of the locomotive. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Explain the instrumentation of locomotives. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Instrumentation includes but is not limited to analogue and digital gauges, vacuum and air operated gauges, temperature gauges and sight glasses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different instrumentation of a locomotive is identified by pointing them out according to the checklist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The indications that the instrumentation give to the locomotive are explained in terms of actions the operator would have to take. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The colour codes of applicable warning lights are described as identified for various applications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Explain the purpose of locomotive control handles. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Control handles may include but are not limited to keys, brake handles and power handles.
  • Control handles refers to mechanical and electrical control handles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different control handles on a locomotive are identified by pointing them out according to checklist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The functions of each handle are described in terms of safety and operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The purpose of keys is described in terms of safety inter-locking. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against the qualification must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this qualification must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or by an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA, according to the ETQA's policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise. Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described in the associated unit standards.
  • Anyone wishing to be assessed against this qualification may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA.
