PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are being introduced to basic single stone setting.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Plan and prepare to seat the gemstone.
  • Seat and set the gemstone.
  • Apply the desired finish.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The following range applies to this unit standard:

    The learner must select one of the following gemstone setting techniques:
  • Set a stone in a tube setting.
  • Set a stone in a claw setting.
  • Raise beads to set a stone.

    Stones to be set include cabochon and faceted stones.

  • Tubes: A hollow metal cylinder into which stones are set (Also known as chenier, bezel, or box).
  • Claws: Rods of metal that face upwards to hold (embed) a stone. Claws are also known as prongs in the industry.
  • Beads: Small burs of metal that are raised by digging the scorper into the metal and lifting it.
