PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner studying towards achieving this unit standard will develop semi-professional practical instrument ability.

This unit standard will further develop the learner within the music field by providing recognition, mobility and portability within the various sub-fields of economic activity in the music industry. The skills, knowledge and attitudes embedded within this unit standard are essential for developing competencies in the field of music.

Learner accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Analysing and demonstrating knowledge of four different genres on chosen instrument.
  • Demonstrating semi-professional technical skills on the chosen instrument.
  • Performing on chosen instrument.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Analyse and demonstrate knowledge of five different genres on chosen instrument. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Music instruments include but are not limited to voice, bass, drum kit, guitar, piano. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Origin and development of genres is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sounds of the various genres on the chosen instrument are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rhythmic characteristics are explained and demonstrated for each genre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Melodic characteristics are explained and demonstrated for each genre. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate technical skills on the chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Warm up exercises are conducted according to the chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Position of notes on chosen instrument is expanded upon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Scales for melodic instruments or rudiments for un-tuned percussion instruments passages are played. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical exercises are played using the chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Chords/broken chords are demonstrated for melodic instruments or grooves are demonstrated for un-tuned percussion. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Technical skills includes, but not limited to:
  • Semi-quaver and semi-quaver triplet rhythms, all modes of the melodic minor scale, all diatonic chords of the melodic minor scale.

    Perform on chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Music piece is performed un/accompanied. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Five music pieces differing in genre are performed with accompaniment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Suitable rhythm and phrasing are applied to the specific pieces according to the genre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Suitable tempo is applied to the specific pieces according to the genre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Performance indicators/form is adhered to in the selected pieces. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Sight read and play on chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An excerpt of no less than twenty four bars is played from sight. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Time signature is observed according to the genre. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to:
  • Time Signatures of 2/4, , 4/4, 6/8, 9/8 and 12/8.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Key signature is observed according to the genre. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to:
  • Keys of C, G, F, D, Bb, A, E, Eb, Ab, B, F#, G and Bb Major and their relative minors.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Notated note values and rests are adhered to the genre. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to:
  • Semi-breve, minim, crochet, quaver notes, crochet and quaver triplets and rests. Dots and ties for all the above note values included.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Correct pitch is recognised and demonstrated in accordance with organisational specifications. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of Level 6 competency in the music field.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and ETQA guidelines.
