This unit standard will further develop the learner within the music field by providing recognition, mobility and portability within the various sub-fields of economic activity in the music industry. The skills, knowledge and attitudes embedded within this unit standard are essential for developing competencies in the field of music.

    Analyse and demonstrate knowledge of five different genres on chosen instrument.

    Music instruments include but are not limited to voice, bass, drum kit, guitar, piano.

    Origin and development of genres is explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sounds of the various genres on the chosen instrument are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rhythmic characteristics are explained and demonstrated for each genre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Melodic characteristics are explained and demonstrated for each genre. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate technical skills on the chosen instrument.

    Warm up exercises are conducted according to the chosen instrument.

    Position of notes on chosen instrument is expanded upon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Scales for melodic instruments or rudiments for un-tuned percussion instruments passages are played. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical exercises are played using the chosen instrument. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Chords/broken chords are demonstrated for melodic instruments or grooves are demonstrated for un-tuned percussion.

    Technical skills includes, but not limited to:
  • Semi-quaver and semi-quaver triplet rhythms, all modes of the melodic minor scale, all diatonic chords of the melodic minor scale.

    Suitable rhythm and phrasing are applied to the specific pieces according to the genre.

    Suitable tempo is applied to the specific pieces according to the genre.

    Performance indicators/form is adhered to in the selected pieces.
