PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who require product knowledge to enter and operate within the jewellery environment.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the various categories of merchandise.
  • Identify various precious metals and their simulants.
  • Recognise basic gemstones.
  • Identify jewellery manufacturing processes.

    The various categories of merchandise are identified according to jewellery industry standards.

    Merchandise under each category is identified according to generally accepted jewellery industry standards.

    The application of the merchandise is described according to general jewellery industry standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The correct merchandise is selected from various types of jewellery in accordance with given instructions. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify various precious metals and their simulants. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Precious metals must include identification of any two of the following:
  • Alloyed Platinum.
  • Alloyed Gold.
  • Alloyed Silver.

    Simulants must include but is not limited to identification of any two of the following:
  • Pewter.
  • Zinc.
  • Aluminium.
  • Nickel silver.
  • Stainless steel.
  • Brass.
  • Copper.
  • Plating:
    > Gold plating, Chrome plating, Nickel plating.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hallmarks are identified and described according to precious metal quality standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Metal fineness is determined in accordance with hallmarking standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The differences between a precious metal and its simulants are recognized and explained in terms of jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not adhering to correct identification of metals are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Recognise basic gemstones. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Basic gem recognition must include but is not limited to the following:
  • Diamonds.
  • Rubies.
  • Blue Sapphires.
  • Emeralds.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Basic gemstones are categorised by colour and type. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Physical properties of gemstones pertaining to the incorporation in jewellery are described according to jewellery manufacturing quality standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The physical properties must include:
  • Hardness.
  • Porosity.
  • Inclusions.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of incorrect handling, cleaning and maintaining of gemstones are described in terms of potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The cut of a gemstone is identified in accordance with gemstone identification standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The cut of the gemstone refers to the shape, and must include the following:
  • Round brilliant cut.
  • Marquise cut.
  • Emerald cut.
  • Baguette cut.
  • Cabochon.
     

  • SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Identify jewellery manufacturing processes. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Manufacturing processes must include but is not limited to:
  • Hand manufactured.
  • Machine manufacture.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The various manufacturing processes in the jewellery environment are identified and described in terms of jewellery manufacturing requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Jewellery pieces are analysed and the process of manufacture is identified in terms of jewellery manufacturing standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Consequences of incorrect identification of manufacturing processes are described in terms of the potential impact on occupational health and safety, productivity and quality.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
