PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners accredited with this standard will grasp some of the theoretical and practical aspects pertaining to the aircraft. They will also learn about radio usage, loads and balances.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the aircraft.
  • Explaining the aerodynamics of flight.
  • Operating a radio.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Communication at NQF Level 2.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Explain the aerodynamics of flight.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The four forces acting on an aircraft in flight are described to show how each causes the plane to fly.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES
These are lift, drag, weight, thrust.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The three axes of an aircraft are identified and described in terms of the movement around each.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The concept 'aircraft attitude' is defined and the possible attitudes are listed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Aircraft primary controls are described in terms of their effect on an aircraft in flight.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Includes yaw, pitch, roll.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
The aspects of weight and balance are discussed in terms of their effect on aircraft weight and movement.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
