PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learner accredited with this standard will know about the legislation, regulation and standard operating procedures that govern the operation of vehicles that support aircraft servicing. They will also learn about the door and cargo holds mechanism and how to operate them safely and to recognize defects and problems with them.

Learners credited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Complying with the safety and roadworthiness requirements of airport vehicles/specialised equipment.
  • Operating vehicles at the airport/ specialised equipment.
  • Opening and closing aircraft doors and cargo holds.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Comply with the safety and roadworthiness requirements of airport vehicles/specialised equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Pre-trip inspections of vehicles/specialised equipment are performed to ensure safety in use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Defects or problems are addressed so as to maintain the vehicles' roadworthiness or the functionality of the specialised equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Supporting documentation is prepared and managed according to procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Operate vehicles/specialised equipment at the airport. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reason why operators need to have national driving licences and public driving permits when operating in an airport are explained in relation to the consequences of non-compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Vehicle/specialised equipment operators are certified as competent in terms of standard operating procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Airport and other legal aspects related to vehicles are complied with to prevent consequences as a result of non-compliance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Vehicles/specialised equipment are operated according to regulations and standard operating procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Open and close aircraft doors and cargo holds. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Door and cargo holding operating mechanisms are described in terms of their differences, possible defects and normal wear and tare. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Passenger and cargo hold doors are operated according to standard operating procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Includes but is not limited to hydraulic and electric cargo hold doors, passenger doors operated by hand and electrically.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of securing loads is explained and the reporting of defective equipment in cargo holds is described as per procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Passenger and cargo door operators are certified to ensure that that only qualified personnel perform these task.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
