PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Maritime Sector who work/wish to work as an officer on the bridge of a ship. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent maritime officers who are able to apply navigation systems other that radar and therefore contribute to a safer environment on the ship and at sea. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills required for planning and executing a safe navigational passage.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will, in the case of the Merchant Navy and the Fishing Industry, contribute to the economic upliftment of the country, and in the case of the South African Navy, contribute the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Use a radio direction finder to obtain a bearing of a transmitting station.
  • Use an echo sounder to navigate safely.
  • Use speed logs to determine the speed of the ship on passage.
  • Obtain the ship's position by using satellite navigation equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of electronic chart information when navigating.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The radio direction finder is applied according to its principles and limitations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A designated radio beacon is identified using the correct methods and reference material.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Reference materials include but not limited to the Admiralty List of Radio Signals Volume II.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The bearing taken to the beacon is plotted on the relevant chart.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Bearings include sky waves, semi-circular error, quadrantal error and coast effect.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
An explanation is given of the use of a direction finder when tuning in to distress frequencies or "homing" on to a casualty.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Use an echo sounder to navigate safely.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An explanation is given of the basic principles of ship-borne echo sounders with reference to the main components of echo sounding equipment and the types in use at sea.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Basic information from the echo sounder is interpreted for referencing to the appropriate hydrographic chart.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
An explanation of precautions to be observed in the use of the echo sounder is given with reference to implications for accuracy.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Use speed logs to determine the speed of the ship on passage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A ship-borne speed log is applied according to its basic principles of operation while taking into consideration frequency, wavelength, and the Doppler effect.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Information from a typical log is interpreted to determine speed within the constraints of precautions to be observed and expected accuracy.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Obtain the ship's position by using satellite navigation equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An explanation is given of the basic principles of satellite navigation systems.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The explanation includes major components, theory of satellite orbits, types of orbits, sources and causes of errors, corrections and expected accuracy, coverage areas and augmentation systems.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The position of the ship is determined using satellite navigation equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The position of the ship is plotted on the appropriate hydrographic chart.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
An explanation is given of the principle and operation of the Electronic Position Indicating Radio Beacons with reference to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5
Demonstrate knowledge of electronic chart information when navigating.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An explanation is given of the components of an Electronic Chart Display and Information System with reference to the International Hydrographic Organisation performance standard.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
