PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Maritime Sector who work/wish to work as an officer on the bridge of a ship. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent maritime officers who by ensuring the watertight integrity of a ship, contribute to a safer environment on the ship and at sea. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to monitor and maintain the watertight integrity of a ship.

The competencies achieved by the learner in this Unit Standard will, in the case of the Merchant Navy and the Fishing Industry, contribute to the economic upliftment of the country, and in the case of the South African Navy, contribute the preservation of human life and the defence of South African warships, territorial waters and/or area of responsibility, thus providing a safer and secure society for South African citizens.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate an understanding of general arrangements of common large and small ship types. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Elevations and plan views of the common types of large vessels are drawn to illustrate the differences in design. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Types include may include but are not limited to transport ships and frigates.
  • Design features include capacity plan, rigging plan, piping arrangements and shell expansion plan.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of principle parts and fittings of small vessels with reference to their purpose. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Parts and fittings include the bow, stern, stem, bulwarks, hull, hatch, hold, access doors, rudder, propeller, superstructure, hull valves, grid cooler, mast and funnel.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the reasons for watertight deck and superstructure with reference to the safety and stability of the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of the structural components and fittings of a ship in terms of their purpose and reasons for any increased strength with reference to stress and watertight integrity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    A description is given of parts, standard steel sections and fittings relevant to watertight integrity in terms of their purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    A description is given of the main dimensions and coefficients of ship design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of shear force and bending moments in qualitative terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The loading and sea state conditions in which a ship operates are illustrated in hogging and sagging stress diagrams in order to explain the effects on the hull structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Racking, tensile, compressive, local and twisting stresses on a ship's hull are illustrated with reference to the measures taken to reduce these stresses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A typical weight curve is drawn to illustrate the imbalance of weight and buoyancy along the length of the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Typical load curves, shear force diagrams and bending moment diagrams are drawn to illustrate forces on the ship's structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Typical buoyancy curves are drawn to illustrate forces on a ship's structure for a ship in different situations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Situations include but are not limited to ships in still water, with a wave crest amidships and with a wave trough amidships.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of load lines. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of the purpose of load line markings with the aid of sketches drawn to scale. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Marking include Plimsoll marks, Summer draught, deck line, summer freeboard, loadline zones, winter and tropic freeboards, Winter North Atlantic, fresh water allowance and Timber Load Lines.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the relationship between buoyancy and displacement with reference to implications for watertight integrity of the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the relationship between reserve buoyancy and freeboard with reference to implications for watertight integrity of the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The applicable load line is determined by assessing the ship's maximum load of deadweight. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An explanation is given in terms of the checking of a freebord to determine that it is within its permitted limits of loading. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    An explanation is given of the positioning of the draught marks of a ship with reference to implications for watertight integrity of the ship.

    Explain how the structure and attachments of hull fittings are constructed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of hatch covers in terms of watertighness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Covers include weather deck, main deck, mechanical steel hatch covers coamings, cross joints, cleats, dogs, portable beams, wooden hatch boards, tarpaulins and manholes.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given of the method of compensation for loss of strength and stress concentrations at hatch openings with reference to implications for watertight integrity of the ship. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A description is given of the structural arrangements with reference to watertight integrity of the ship. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Structural arrangements include watertight and oil tight hatches, various vent types, rudder stock aperture and stern seals.
