PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner will be able to utilise the Radio Train Token system of train control by receiving, identifying, verifying and reacting to tokens and will be able to conform to Principles of Safe Movement on Rail (POSMOR) and related train working rules in a specific railway environment and contribute to safe movement on rail.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This standard excludes:
  • The administering of any current system of train control except Radio Train Token system for construction trains.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Complete and verify tokens for the Radio Train Token system of train control. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The radio authorisation communication procedure is explained in terms of company directives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Portfolio of a train is compiled and forwarded to the control office in the prescribed format. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Train movement information is obtained from the controller and recorded in Radio Train Token and verified in accordance with company directives. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Information includes but is not limited to train number, section(s), purpose, crew.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The procedure to request permission for movement is explained in terms of company directives. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Execute movement of a train under control of a Radio Train Token system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The Radio Train Token procedures to move a train are explained in terms of company directives. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures include but are not limited to radio management procedures, crossing procedures at token stations, inter-siding(s) kilometre points, admittance procedures, departure procedures, reporting train positions and cancellation of token procedures, route reporting procedures.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The admittance procedures at a Radio Token station are applied in accordance with company directives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The crossing procedures at a Radio Token station are applied in accordance with company directives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The departure procedures at a Radio Token station are applied in accordance with company directives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    En route reporting procedures of train positions are applied in accordance with company directives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Destination reporting procedures of train positions are applied in accordance with company directives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Crossing reporting procedures of train positions are applied in accordance with company directives.

    The reporting procedures of Radio Train token cancellations are applied in accordance with company directives. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provided institution that has been accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • A learner specializing in Rail Operations through this elective standard will be assessed by an assessor who has been certified as competent against the National Certificate in Rail Operations NQF level 5, which must include this standard.
  • A learner specializing in Train Driving through this elective standard will be assessed by an assessor who has been certified as competent against the National Certificate in Train Driving NQF level 4, which must include this standard.
  • Any assessor and training provider must ensure that the relevant company-specific procedures/rules are used as reference material when designing courseware, assessment or when selecting pre-designed assessments.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant TRANSPORT SETA ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this standard must be registered and accredited as a provider at SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be done by the relevant ETQA as prescribed.
