PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
A learner will be able to understand signs related to high voltage (1000 volt and more) and apply safety procedures when working near or underneath high-voltage equipment in accordance with legislation, company-specific working rules and procedures.

Legislation and safety procedures are explained in terms of working near or underneath high voltage power supply infrastructure (HVPSI). 
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
High voltage power supply infrastructure may include but is not limited to overhead cables, overhead tracks, substations, pantographs and pylons.

Signs/boards that are erected at HVPSI are identified in terms of their purpose and meaning.

Signs/boards that are erected at HVPSI are described in terms of their purpose and meaning.

The parameters for safe working procedures under or near HVPSI are explained in terms of hazards when marshaling or handling construction and maintenance equipment.

The safety procedures for handling equipment or marshaling near or under HVPSI are explained in terms of company directives. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
The authorization procedure to marshal or conduct construction and maintenance under or near HVPSI is explained in terms of company directives. 

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
An instruction to marshal or operate construction and maintenance equipment under or near HVPSI is interpreted to demonstrate an understanding of the parameters for safe working procedures.

A high voltage cable is earthed and isolated with earth cables in accordance with company directives.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provided institution that has been accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • Any assessor and training provider must ensure that the relevant company-specific procedures/rules are used as reference material when designing courseware, assessment or when selecting pre-designed assessments.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant TRANSPORT SETA-ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this standard must be registered and accredited as a provider at SAQA.
