PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of Automotive Repair and Maintenance require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learner is capable of removing, balancing, refitting wheels and identifying tyre and rim damage so that suspension and tyre damage is eliminated. This unit standard may be used in the context of one or more of the following areas of specialisation:
  • Passenger vehicle.
  • Commercial vehicle.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has already learned the use of engineering hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment and to maintain a safe and productive working environment.

    Learners are also assumed to be competent in Mathematical literacy and Communication at NQF Level 1. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The ranges as indicated under the Specific Outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard. All work is performed under supervision and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and prepare for wheel balancing. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Planning includes interpreting task instructions, identify tools and equipment and arrange for vehicle to be parked in demarcated area.
  • Preparing includes raising vehicle, removing wheels and inspecting rims and tyres for damage.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The wheel to be balanced is identified from given documentation and customer information. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation includes job cards, customer requests and manufacturer service schedules.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    All tools and equipment required to perform the task are checked and prepared for use prior to commencing with the wheel balancing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The vehicle is raised in accordance with appropriate lifting procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The wheel is removed in accordance with workplace accepted procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The rim and tyre is inspected for damage according to worksite procedure. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare the wheel-balancing machine. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Preparing includes mounting wheel to balancing machine, pre-calibrate and setting wheel balancing machine to wheel specifications.

    The wheel balancing machine is set for the specific wheel to be balanced. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The wheel balancing machine is pre-calibrated in accordance with manufacturer specifications.

    The wheel is mounted to the wheel balancing machine according to machine specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The wheel balancing machine is adjusted according to specific wheel requirements.

    The value and position of balancing weights are determined and fitted according to manufacturer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The wheel is balanced according to workplace procedures and equipment manufacturer specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Reasons for balancing a wheel are explained in terms of tyre wear and vehicle safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Applicable SHE procedures are followed during the wheel balancing activity.

    Apply safety procedures during the work activity.

    Safety procedures include raising the vehicle, removing the wheels, balancing the wheels and refitting wheels.

    All workshop manual safety warnings and required actions before, during and after balancing the wheel are adhered to.

    Applicable SHE procedures are followed whilst balancing the wheel.
