PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people in the automotive engineering industry who are expected to diagnose and repair forced induction systems in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer service manuals.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Read and interpret the job instructions.
  • Inspect system components for condition.
  • Diagnose faults.
  • Repair the faults.
  • Apply safety procedures during the repair and assembly task.
  • Restore work area, complete and process documentation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect system components for condition. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Inspect includes checking for error codes with the scan tool.
  • Error codes include knock sensor, throttle position sensor, manifold pressure sensor and manifold temperature sensor.
  • System condition includes connection of vacuum lines to the waste gate and oil lines to the turbocharger, waste gate diaphragm leakage and operation, boost pressure, lack of power, colour of engine smoke and abnormal noises.

    Faults identified are recorded in accordance with repair manual and quality procedures.

    Reasons for inspecting forced induction systems are explained in terms of identification of faults.

    Reasons for selecting correct tools and equipment are explained in terms of the type of work and productivity.

  • Diagnose include recognising system faults such as inadequate boost pressure, leaking shaft seals, damaged turbine or compressor wheels, excess boost, contaminated oil, stuck by-pass actuator, internal rotor or housing wear and bearing noise.
