PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who intend following a career in the diamond processing sector and who are required to set up diamond gemstones for parting by sawing.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • Explain the implications for setting up diamond gemstones for sawing.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:
  • Use a loupe to examine a diamond gemstone.
  • Identify polishing grains and planes in diamond gemstones.
  • Explain the requirements for security of diamonds. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.
  • This unit standard applies to persons setting up any type of diamond gemstones for parting by sawing under minimal supervision.

    Describe the use of the different sizes and depth of pots for sawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different pots and their components used to part diamond gemstones by sawing are identified and their uses in different applications are explained in terms of key features, applications and methods of use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The process for parting diamonds by sawing is explained in terms of the importance of setting of the diamonds and following the instructions from the Marker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practices are explained to maintain good housekeeping, safety and security in the workplace and care of pots in line with workplace specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Security of diamonds must include:
  • Safeguarding of stones.
  • Allocation of stones received to the correct parcels.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and productivity. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Deviations from workplace specific practices must include:
  • Incorrect size of pot.
  • Incorrect depth of pot.
  • Incorrect angle for sawing.

    The sawing line is identified and explained in terms of the position and angle of gemstones when set in the pot. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The implications of incorrect setting are explained in terms of types of problems that can be encountered, key features and the impact on sawing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The types of problems that can be encountered must include:
  • Incorrect size of pot.
  • Incorrect depth of pot.
  • Incorrect angle of the gemstone.
  • Excess pressure.

    Methods for rectifying and/or avoiding problems identified are described in terms of workplace accepted procedures.

    Set up diamond gemstones for parting by sawing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is selected and applied according to required standards of occupational health and safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Stones are located and set up in appropriate pots for sawing according to workplace specific setting up standards.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Setting up hints and techniques are explained in terms of different applications and the consequences of using inappropriate setting up procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stones that have been set up are checked for correct positioning and remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Pots are checked for any defects during the setting up process. Remedial action is taken in line with workplace specific operating procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct post-setting-up cleaning, checking and security activities.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Diamond gemstones are handed over for sawing in accordance with workplace procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after handing over for sawing. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean work area.
  • Clean workbench.
  • Replace spare pots into correct storage facilities.
  • Dispose of used pots in appropriate facility.
  • Maintenance of personal protective clothing and equipment.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Diamond gemstones are accounted for during and after setting up and on handing over in terms of workplace security systems. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant Education, Training, Quality, Assurance (ETQA) Body, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
