PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner achieving this unit standard in combination with context expertise standard(s) will be able to identify and monitor health needs using the quality assurance framework, and plan a locally-relevant health intervention in the context of water and sanitation improvement projects. Learners accessing this standard will be working in health and hygiene monitoring. This competence will enable the learner to monitor health awareness in communities, which will contribute towards improved environmental health and socio-economic well-being within a community and the preservation of environmental resources for future generations. Achieving this unit standard will provide foundational learning that will advance his/her own expertise and employability in the water and other related sectors. This skill will contribute towards effective health and hygiene promotion at project team level.

The Learner will be able to:
  • Monitor locally specific health and hygiene interventions.
  • Report monitoring indicators to the project facilitator.
  • Demonstrate understanding of quality assurance practices as a basis of project implementation monitoring.
  • Resolve non-conformance issues in water, health and sanitation projects.
  • Demonstrate understanding of basic health, social and environmental issues which relate to the sanitation environment.

    Literacy and communication skills at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard should be able to gather data at the local level and use this to plan a locally relevant health monitoring intervention related to water and sanitation issues. This work should include the relevance of good sanitation and hygiene to people living with HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis as well as an understanding of pathogens, the cycle of infection, breaking the cycle of infection (wherever possible) using quality assurance, appropriate behaviours and technologies.

    Methods selected for monitoring interventions are appropriate for the specific intervention.

    Specific health and hygiene interventions are monitored in line with project requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools used to conduct water and sanitation-related health and hygiene monitoring are appropriate to the scenario.

    Sanitation promotion interventions are monitored in accordance with the project outline and variances are recorded in accordance with workplace procedures.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.   • The cycle of disease (exposure, infection, contamination of water sources, food etc, re-exposure etc).
  • Aspects of hygiene promotion such as safe disposal of human faeces, safe use and protection of water sources, home and environmental hygiene, food hygiene, water and personal hygiene.
  • Sanitation promotion and creating demand for good sanitation, providing user education, monitoring and evaluation.
  • The links between HIV/AIDS, access to water and good sanitation facilities, and good hygiene practices, both in the care of people living with AIDS, and in preventing secondary infections.
