PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of polishing painted automotive panels to eliminate paint imperfections and enhance gloss levels.

This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression and is an elective unit standard for a spray painter.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
This unit standard is one of a series of unit standards for spray painting vehicles in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It is assumed that the learner is already competent to:
  • Select, use and care for engineering hand tools.
  • Keep the work area safe and productive.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The following range information is applicable to the entire unit standard:
  • All work is performed under supervision at regular intervals and according to workplace and workshop manual specifications and occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.
  • Paint imperfections are limited to those that can be polished out and include dust spots, fish eyes, runs, orange peel and surface texture.
  • Polishing should only be undertaken when required, i.e. when visual defects are present.

Additional range information is provided at specific outcomes and assessment criteria as necessary.
