PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Safety in Society sub-field who work/wish to work in the Correctional Services as Corrections Officials. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent Corrections Officials are able to use security equipment and thereby contribute to a safer society for the citizens of South Africa. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to control and use security equipment.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Receive and return of security equipment.
  • Use security equipment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3. 
    		•

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Security equipment includes but is not limited to bullet-proof vest, riot equipment, two-way radio, firearm, ammunition, tonfa, pocket book, mechanical restrains, whistle and panic button.

    Receive and return of security equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Security equipment required for the task is identified from the available resources at the correctional centre. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Security equipment is received and returned according to organisation policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Security equipment is inspected for functionality on receipt and return according to manufacturer's specifications and organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Damaged and/or defects in security equipment is recorded and reported according to organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Use security equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of the application of different security equipment in terms of its functionality and optimum use in corrections. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Security equipment is used according to manufacturer's instructions and organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Security equipment in the possession of the official is controlled according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The temporary handing over of security equipment is conducted according to organisational procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
