PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Safety in Society sub-field who work/wish to work in the Correctional Services as Corrections Officials. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent Corrections Officials who by providing security services in a correctional context, contribute to a safe society for the citizens of South Africa. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to conduct security related duties on the premises of the correctional facility, at the entrance and on the perimeter, as well as external escorting and guarding of inmates in public. These duties may be performed during the day or at night.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Guard inmates.
  • Perform escort duties.
  • Conduct patrols and tower post duties.
  • Control access and exit points.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Guard inmates. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Guard refers but is not limited to guarding inmates on work teams and in the public. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Inmates are collected according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Inmate collection procedures includes but is not limited to establishing identify and work team, searching inmates, counting and reporting total number of the team, collecting of inmates' identity cards, checking safety equipment and protective clothing of inmates, food and water for inmates.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Inmates are escorted by foot or vehicle to and from the site in accordance with organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Site refers to the work site or public venue.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Inmates are guarded at the site according to security measures and organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Mechanical restraints are used in accordance with relevant policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Emergency situations are handled according to organisational policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Emergencies include but are not limited to injury, fighting, escapes, ill-health and fire.

    Perform escort duties. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Escort duties include but are not limited to hospitals, courts, transfers and other external visits.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Escorting documentation is obtained and completed according to organisational procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation includes but is not limited to warrant of detention, J7, route order, medical file, trip sheet, inmate's file, G111 and G334.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Control over the inmate is exercised during transit in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Emergency situations are handled according to organisational policies and procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Emergencies includes but is not limited to road traffic accident, route deviation, hijacking, hostage taking, injury, fighting, escapes, ill-health and fire.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct patrols and tower post duties. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Patrols and tower post duties are conducted in accordance with organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Security breaches, incidents and risks are recorded and reported according to standing instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the consequences of not performing duties according to organisational procedures in relation to given scenarios/case studies.

    Documentation and reporting is completed in accordance with organisational administrative requirements.

    Individuals and vehicles are searched in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Incidents and emergencies are reported according to organisational policies and procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
