PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Safety in Society sub-field who work/wish to work in the Correctional Services as Corrections Officials. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent Corrections Officials who by understanding the offender rehabilitation path and how it is applied in unit management, will contribute to the rehabilitation of offenders. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to implementing an offender's sentence plan.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how offender rehabilitation is applied within the concept of unit management.
  • Administer the admission of offenders.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the classification process of the offender.
  • Explain the implementation of the sentence plan using unit management principles.

    The administration process may include but is not limited to the admission unit, the assessment unit, the housing unit, special care, pre-release and community corrections.

    Administration of admissions is conducted in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Orientation of offenders is conducted during the admission process according to organisational procedures.

    Basic necessities are issued to the offender in accordance prescribed procedures.

    An explanation is given of the purpose of the sentence in relation to the rehabilitation process.

    An explanation is given of sentence plan development in relation to the rehabilitation process.

    An explanation is given of the roles and responsibilities of the correctional officials in relation to the implementation of the sentence plan.

    Implementation of the sentence plan is facilitated and monitored in line with the rehabilitation process.

    An explanation is given of the roles and responsibilities of role-players in terms of the community corrections system. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Role-players include but are not limited to civil society organisations, Community Corrections Officials, community, families and employers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Recording and reporting within Community Corrections are executed according to organizational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Referrals within Community Corrections are effected according to identified needs and risks. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
