PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners within the Safety in Society sub-field who work/wish to work in the Correctional Services as Corrections Officials. This Unit Standard meets the needs of the sub-field and of the society by providing competent Corrections Officials who by understanding the rights of offenders, contribute to a safer society for the citizens of South Africa. The learner successfully completing this Unit Standard will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to understanding of human rights, as contained in the Bill of Rights, in the context of corrections.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain human rights in relation to the provision of correctional services.
  • Distinguish between violation and lawful limitation of human rights.
  • Explain compliance of human rights in the provision of correctional services.

    A description is given of structures involved in the promotion of human rights in terms of their functions and powers.

    An explanation is given of the limitations of human rights in the context of correctional services mandates.

    Distinguish between violation and lawful limitation of human rights.

    An explanation is given of the nature of the limitation clause in relation to the South African Constitution.

    An explanation is given of the provisions of the limitation clause in relation to the Correctional Services Act.

    A description is given of the requirements for lawful limitation in accordance with legal needs.

    A description is given of how the conduct of a correctional official may limit the human rights of an offender. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A description is given by using examples of conduct by a correctional official that poses a significant risk of violation of human rights. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An explanation is given of the consequences of human rights violations. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
