PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Qualifying learners are capable of demonstrating knowledge and identifying of tractor and agricultural machinery tyre types and sizes; demonstrating knowledge of tyre damage, repair techniques, and maintenance requirements; demonstrating knowledge of tractor wheels; and remove and replace tractor tyres.

This unit standard makes provision for the automotive retail industry with special reference to identifying tyre applications for tractors and agricultural machinery with regard to vehicles in the following categories; agricultural vehicles; Off Road (ATR) vehicles and earth moving equipment.

On achievement of this unit standard, the learner will be able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tractor and agricultural machinery tyre types and sizes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tyre damage, repair techniques, and maintenance requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tractor wheels.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • An individual wishing to be assessed against the unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or one with an appropriate MOU with the relevant ETQA.

  • Measurement relating to rim diameter and tyre section width, low profile aspect ratio, side wall markings - speed and loading indexing characteristics.
  • Cross ply - rayon and nylon; radial - rayon and nylon; steel belted plies; beads, side walls, apexes and chafers; rubber compounds.
  • Matching tyre circumferences for four wheel drive and wheel assisted machines; front tyre lead - performance, safe handling, and mechanical considerations of the machine.
  • Water valves, dry valves, tubeless stems, tube stems.
  • Under-inflation wear pattern, over inflation wear pattern.
  • Broken tyre walls, lug damage through spinning, staking, ozone cracking, petroleum and herbicide deterioration.
  • Permanent vulcanising, cold chemical cure, temporary boots, tyre "worms".
  • Pressures, hard surface, soft surface, ballast, antifreeze, water, calcium chloride, petroleum product and herbicide contamination, deterioration prevention.
  • Single well rims, double rims, wheel discs and settings, power adjusted rims.
  • Safe jacking points, jack capacities, safe stands, removal of wheels.
  • Safe working practices, selection and use of tyre tools and equipment.
  • Descaling, painting, straightening, welds, rivet replacement.
