PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who are required to test rough diamond gemstones for fluorescence.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Identify the equipment used to test rough diamond gemstones for fluorescence and describe their application.
  • Prepare for testing fluorescence of rough diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct testing of fluorescence of rough diamond gemstones.
  • Conduct post-fluorescence testing reconciliation, checking and security activities.

    The scope and context applies to the conversion of rough diamond gemstones into cut and polished diamond gemstones for sale into local and international markets.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Identify the equipment used to test rough diamond gemstones for fluorescence and describe their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment used for testing diamond gemstones for fluorescence is identified and the use in different applications is explained in terms of key features, applications and methods for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The methodology of assessing fluorescence in diamond gemstones is explained in terms of the use of ultra violet light. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Practices are explained to maintain housekeeping, security of diamond gemstones, safety in the workplace and care of equipment in line with workplace specific requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of deviating from workplace specific practices are described in terms of potential impact on health, safety, equipment, products and profitability. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for fluorescence testing of rough diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The equipment used for fluorescence testing of rough diamond gemstones is checked to ensure it is ready for use. Any problems encountered are dealt with in terms of workplace specific procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The appropriate protective equipment is sourced and checked before use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Rough diamond gemstones are mounted in the appropriate stone holder and correctly positioned for fluorescence testing. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Conduct fluorescence testing of rough diamond gemstones. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Each rough diamond gemstone is located in the fluorescence testing equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The equipment is activated and the result is accurately observed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The result of fluorescence testing is recorded in accordance with workplace specific procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Conduct post-fluorescence testing reconciliation, checking and security activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fluorescence tested diamond gemstones are returned to the appropriate storage facility/receptacle. Rough diamond gemstones received are reconciled to the parcel(s) received. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Good housekeeping is exercised after fluorescence testing diamond gemstones. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Good housekeeping must include:
  • Clean hands, equipment and accessories.
  • Replace equipment into correct storage facilities.
  • Diamonds and parcels are secured in the appropriate facilities.

    Diamond gemstones are accounted for after fluorescence testing in terms of the workplace security system.
