PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is useful for people who are required to possess, handle and account for diamond gemstones in the performance of their duties.

Learners credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Describe the general requirements for safeguarding diamonds in the workplace.
  • Explain the importance and implications of acknowledging receipt of diamond gemstones.
  • Explain the workplace procedures for receiving and issuing of diamonds.
  • Describe the consequences of failing to take due care of diamonds in their possession.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and contribute to the upliftment and economic growth of the mining and minerals sector, particularly in the aspect of beneficiation.

    This unit standard is intended to promote general skills, knowledge and understanding of the diamond processing industry in the mining and minerals sector in order to ensure knowledgeable and informed workers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The general requirements of the law are described regarding possession of diamonds, licensing of ownership and premises. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Diamonds must include:
  • Rough diamonds.
  • Semi-polished diamonds.
  • Polished diamonds.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    General principles for maintaining security of diamonds in the workplace are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Security of diamonds must include:
  • Safeguarding of stones.
  • Allocation of stones received to the correct parcels.
  • Possession of stones other than those belonging to the licensee.
  • Unmounted diamond imitations or simulants.
  • The possession and custody of containers in the workplace.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of deviating from good security practices are described in terms of potential impact on the employment relationship, the well being of the organisation and compliance with the law.

    Explain the importance and implications of acknowledging receipt of diamond gemstones.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The significance of acknowledging receipt of diamonds is explained in relation to working relationships, trust relationships and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The obligations on the person in possession are explained in terms of legislation and workplace rules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of checking the content of parcels when receiving diamonds is explained in terms of assigned responsibility and traceability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles for safeguarding diamonds during possession, processing, breaks from the workplace and referral to others are described in terms of good working practices.

    Explain the workplace procedures for receiving and issuing of diamonds.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The procedures for recording the transfer of diamonds are described in terms of workplace specific security systems and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The practices for short term security of diamonds during processing are described in terms of the workplace specific security system and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The procedures for dealing with missing diamonds are explained in terms of workplace specific security system and requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Missing diamonds must include:
  • Stone down.
  • Lost stone.
  • Switched stone.
  • Empty parcel.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Practices and individual responsibilities to safeguard diamonds during the processing of polishing are described in terms of workplace specific practices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The workplace specific procedures for dealing with missing stones are described in terms of entry and departure of workplaces, searches and individual accountability. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The respective rights of employee and employer are described in terms of right of search, the right to privacy, protection under the law and sound industrial relations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The implications for non-compliance with the workplace specific security procedures are explained in terms of personal liability, collective liability, industrial relations implications and application of condition in the employment contract. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The criminal consequences of deviations from the law and procedures are described in terms of the right to prosecute parties who do not comply with workplace specific procedures.
