PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is for people whose responsibility is to provide support for aeronautical communication purposes. The qualifying learner will be capable of applying knowledge of how the equipment operates in order to provide support and maintenance services.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Understanding of satellite communication systems.
  • Performing corrective maintenance.
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance.
  • Analysing and monitor equipment performance. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Language and Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 5 or equivalent.
  • Radio Frequency theory at NQF Level 5 or equivalent.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Range of Satellite Communications Systems includes, but is not limited to: Super High frequency radio transmitters & receivers, antennae systems, computer systems, Management Hub, networks and data links.

    Range of links include, but are not limited: to Aeronautical communication links between the RSA, African States and other continents as well as linking in-country radar remote sites.

    Satellite communication principles are explained in terms of its required purpose and functionality.

    Satellite antennae systems are explained in terms of its required purpose and functionality.

    Satellite ground segment is explained in relation to its purpose and functionality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Satellite space segment is explained in relation to its purpose and functionality. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Perform routine preventive maintenance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preventive maintenance requirements are conducted as per schedule and confirmed with customers in accordance with routine maintenance schedules. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Satellite Communication Systems remote control maintenance and monitoring equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Appropriate test equipment and tools are used to perform preventative maintenance as specified by the manufacturer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Satellite Communication service is restored and handed over to the customer according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of failing to carry out preventive maintenance are explained using examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment failure is verified through contacts with customers and monitoring systems according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Preliminary corrective fault diagnosis is conducted using remote control maintenance and monitoring equipment to identify the faulty Satellite Communication components in accordance with manufacturer's corrective maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Preliminary corrective action is conducted using remote control maintenance and monitoring equipment to restore the Satellite Communication through reset, re-alignment or re-configuration in accordance with the corrective maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    On-site corrective fault diagnosis is conducted using test equipment and built-in test equipment to identify faulty modules or components in accordance with corrective maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    On-site corrective action is performed and the faulty modules/components are replaced according to manufacturer's procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Satellite Communication service is restored and handed over to the customer according to organisational procedures.

    Analyse and monitor Satellite Communication system performance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Satellite communication system performance is analysed and measured using supervisory monitoring and maintenance systems as specified in manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The performance of Satellite communication systems is measured using portable and supervisory test equipment as per manufacturer's instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Performance figures are evaluated and verified against manufacturers' Specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical reports are compiled and the status and performance of Satellite Communication equipment is recorded according to organisational procedures.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Identify and solve problems when carrying out fault diagnosis thereby ensuring that appropriate remedial actions are initiated for the effective restoration of failed or defective Satellite Communications Systems.

    Work effectively with others by ensuring equipment performance evaluation is relayed to the Flight Calibration Unit when performing flight checking procedures on Satellite Communications Systems.

    Employ self management by ensuring sufficient time is allocated for carrying out general housekeeping activities in addition to maintenance or repair work to Satellite Communications Systems situated in remote locations.

    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that the role of the technician is a vital part of the integrated radio navigation system which is used by Air Traffic Control, Airline Pilots and the flying community at large and as such should therefore not be regarded as a role which is performed in isolation of this network.

    Routine maintenance schedules have been prepared and are in place for each system based on manufacturers' recommendations, operational requirements and support requirements determined from actual field experience during the operational life of the systems.

    International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommendations publish recommendations and standards for all communications, navigational and surveillance systems used in aviation. The ICAO Annex 10 publication includes the recommendations and standards to be adhered to Satellite Communications Systems.

    Corrective maintenance procedures include procedures contained in equipment manufacturer manuals, ICAO recommendations and site specific maintenance procedures.
