PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner who is credited with this unit standard will be able to provide information about medicines which is based on pharmacology and pharmaceutics.

The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the principles pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
  • Explain how the principles of pharmaceutics influence the effects of medicines in the body.
  • Describe the factors which affect the safety of medicines in patient care.

    The absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of medicines in the human body (pharmacokinetics) are described. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Effects include but are not limited to therapeutic, undesired and adverse effects.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effects of medicines on the systems and organs of the body (pharmacodynamics) are described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The therapeutic classification of medicines is described to match action with treatment objectives. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Officially recognised systems of therapeutic classification are utilised.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain how the principles of pharmaceutics influence the effects of medicines in the body.

    Describe the pharmaceutical factors which affect the delivery and action of a medicine in the body so that an appropriate dosage form may be selected. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Factors include but are not limited to the use of excipients, coatings and vehicles.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Possible dosage forms and routes of administration are described in terms of desired therapeutic outcomes.

    Describe the factors that affect the safety of medicines.

    Interactions and the safety of medicines are described in accordance with current regulatory requirements and available information.

    The regulatory requirements relating to the reporting of adverse reactions to medicines are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Actions to be taken in the event of a medicine recall to ensure effective communication and implementation are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Methods to ensure effective pharmaceutical products supply and storage are described in terms of product integrity.

    Includes, but is not limited to, relevant regulation, schedules, quality assurance, documentary requirements and storage.
