PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for anyone who works in a winemaking or spirits production environment and has to maintain wooden barrels.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of maintaining wooden barrels.
  • Prepare the working environment for and perform maintenance of wooden barrels.
  • Maintain the working area after wooden barrel maintenance.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the winemaking or spirits production environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of manufacturing and assembly. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the winemaking or spirits production environment.

    The purpose of wooden barrel maintenance is explained according to standard principles of oenology and spirits production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The processes and equipment for wooden barrel maintenance are described according to standard operating procedures and within the specific context of the learner's work environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Maintenance procedures may include, but are not limited to:
  • Driving on of hoops.
  • Filling.
  • Sealing.
  • Racking.
  • Sterilising.

    Maintenance procedures do not include cooperage.

    The components and operating principles of the specific equipment within the learner's scope of work are described according to the manufacturers' specifications.
