PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons in the Electrical Engineering, Generation, Distribution, Transmission, Construction and Renewable Energy Sector.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the requirements pertaining to the installation of luminaires.
  • Prepare to install a luminaire.
  • Install the luminaires.
  • Prepare and test the luminaires for operation.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical engineering and construction environment by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of Physical Planning and Construction. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the electrical engineering and construction environment.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Introduction to industry and operational area.
  • Apply and adhere to electrical safety.
  • Identify, interpret and lay out of drawings.

    Lamps may include but are not limited to:
  • Incandescent lamps, General Lighting Service (GLS), Tungsten halogen, compact sources).
  • Low pressure mercury vapour lamps (Switch start, Semi-resonant, Rapid start, Slimline, Compact fluorescent).
  • High intensity discharge lamps (Metal Halide, High Pressure Mercury Vapour, High Pressure Sodium, Low pressure Sodium).

    Explain the requirements pertaining to the selection and methods of installation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reason for selecting specific types and sizes of equipment/components to install luminaires are explained as per SANS 10142-1 requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Cable type, cable size, voltage, current, wattage, frequency rating, termination and insulating material requirements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The impact of size and type of light fittings are explained as per SANS 10142-1 requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The method of cable termination is explained as per installation specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The applicable method of installation is explained as per installation specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The regulations applicable to the installation of luminaires are explained as per SANS 10142-1 requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to install a luminaire.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Appropriate documentation is obtained as per local job requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Job instructions are communicated with the team leader according to project or customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal protective equipment is selected, inspected according to safe work procedures and OHS Act requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Tools, material, work platforms and equipment are selected and transported to the work site as per local job requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Work platforms may include but are not limited to:
  • Stepladders, Ladders, Scaffolding, Telescopic scaffolding or Lift truck.

    The work site is examined for hazardous and sub-standard conditions and corrective action taken where necessary according to safe work procedures and critical task analyses.

    The installation specifications are verified according to job plans and customer requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The consequences of not preparing to install in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Install the luminaire. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Hazards and risks directly related to installing a luminaire are identified and addressed according to safe work procedures and critical task analyses. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The luminaire is installed according to manufacturer`s specifications and customer requirements, in accordance with SANS 10142-1. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This includes mounting, termination, luminaire wiring and accessories.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Safety, good housekeeping and correct environmental practices are followed before, during and after performance. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The consequences of not installing a luminaire in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Prepare and test the luminaire for operation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The luminaire is tested to ensure compliance with SANS 10142-1 requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The luminaire is connected to the power supply and switched on to ensure functionality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Tools, material, work platforms and equipment are cleaned, inspected, stored and waste materials disposed of as per storage procedures and environmental standards. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The feedback report is completed and submitted in time, in compliance with specified requirements for format, contents, accuracy and distribution. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not reporting and performing housekeeping duties in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.
