PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for persons who maintain portable earthing gear and related equipment.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Handle, clean and store portable electrical earthing gear and related equipment.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical distribution environment.

    The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within Geographical Information Sciences environment.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons handling, inspecting, cleaning and storing portable electrical earthing gear and related equipment independently.

    Earthing gear may include, but is not limited to:
  • Low Voltage earthing gear.
  • Medium Voltage earthing gear.
  • High Voltage earthing gear.
  • Equipotential earthing gear.

    Related equipment include:
  • Insulated operating rods (earthing stick, telescopic link stick, operating handle).

    The reason for ensuring well maintained portable earthing gear is explained according to safety standards and statutory requirements.

    The reason for having different types and ratings of portable earthing gear is explained according to system requirements.

    The consequences of not having proper earthing protection is explained according to safety standards and statutory requirements.

    Identify and handle portable electrical earthing gear.

    Loose or broken strands, secure connections, damaged insulation, malfunctioning clamps.

    Unique numbering of portable earthing gear is checked for legibility and record purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Portable earthing gear is cleaned according to approved methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Portable earthing gear is stored according to approved methods. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Inspect, handle and care of insulated operating rods.

    Insulated operating rods are visually inspected and mechanical defects reported. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Damaged/cracked tubes, malfunctioning clamps, metal fitting, securing clips/springs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Numbering of insulated operating rods are checked for legibility and record purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Insulated operating rods are cleaned according to approved methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Insulated operating rods are stored according to approved methods.
