PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for persons in the electrical Reticulation, Distribution and Transmission network environment.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Maintain wayleaves and servitudes on Low/Medium/High Voltage networks.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner within the electrical distribution network environment. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within Geographical Information Sciences environment.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The following knowledge, skills attitude and/or equivalent:
  • Application of Herbicides.
  • Fuel driven vegetation control machines.
  • Dangers of High Voltage systems.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
This unit standard applies to persons required to control vegetation and maintain access gates within servitudes & wayleaves on Low/Medium/High Voltage networks independently, or within a team.

    Vegetation includes:
  • Grass.
  • Weeds.
  • Shrubs.
  • Trees.

    Control methods include:
  • Mechanical (Handheld, chainsaws, weed eaters, brushcutters, high-cutters, etc).
  • Chemical (Systemic, residual & contact types).

    Environmental control include:
  • Indigenous vegetation.
  • Protected vegetation.
  • Alien vegetation.
  • Wildlife protection.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Plan and prepare for maintenance of servitudes and wayleaves.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Preparation/planning of vegetation control is carried out within parameters of designated servitudes or wayleaves according to job instructions and customer requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Applicable tools/machinery are selected for various job combinations and checked for correct operation according to manufacturer's specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The associated personal protective equipment is selected and checked for functionality and defects.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Negotiation of access and notification of the relevant property owners is ensured.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Maintain servitudes, wayleaves and clearances.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The appropriate tools and personal protective equipment are selected according to the specific task requirement on site.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A safety risk assessment is carried out on critical line encroachment and unsafe conditions reported.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Clearing of vegetation is done according to servitude/wayleave/clearance parameters and standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Vegetation is cut, stored/stacked/removed as per negotiation with the land owner.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Selective chemical treatment for specific vegetation is applied where applicable according to herbicide manufacturer`s specifications and applicable environmental legislation.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Maintain access gates, roads and prevent soil erosion.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Access gates are inspected for proper operation and maintained according to applicable standards.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Locking devices for access gates are checked to be in place and operational according to area specifications/customer requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The access road is inspected for ease of access.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Soil erosion is backfilled and preventative measures implemented to minimise re-occurrence.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Conclude the task.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Ensure that access gates are left open/closed as per customer requirements.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
All tools & equipment are cleaned, stored and any defects reported as per the relevant procedures.
