PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for external inspections and repairing of external defects on a flameproof enclosure.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the requirements pertaining to a close inspection on flameproof enclosures.
  • Prepare to inspect the enclosure.
  • Inspect and repair the enclosure.
  • Perform reporting and housekeeping duties.

  • Cleaning the enclosure externally.
  • External visual inspection of the enclosure for flameproofness.
  • Measurement of the flame path gaps.
  • Recording and reporting of defects.
  • Securing of loose bolts.
  • Replacing of missing bolts.
  • Identification and rectification of external defects, for example, loose bolts, which will be apparent only by visual inspection and the use of a tool, and which do not normally require the enclosure to be opened, or the equipment to be de-energised.

    The application of the different types of cleaning material, equipment and solvents are explained with reference to health, safety and impact on the environment.

    The various cleaning methods are explained with reference to washing and dusting. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The requirements in terms of flameproofness are explained with reference to legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The external operational requirements of a flameproof enclosure are explained in terms of specified requirements.

    Tools, material and equipment are selected, examined and transported in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Permission to enter the workplace where applicable is obtained in accordance with specified requirements.

    Where applicable, equipment and machines are locked out and made safe in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not preparing for inspection and cleaning in line with specific requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    The workplace is examined for hazardous and sub-standard conditions. Critical hazards and sub-standard conditions encountered in a particular context are addressed in a manner consistent with documented best practice.

    The enclosure is identified, cleaned and inspected in accordance with specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Defects identified are addressed in accordance with specified requirements.

    Hazards and risks directly related to the cleaning and inspection of the enclosure are identified and addressed in accordance with specified requirements.

    The consequences of not performing reporting and housekeeping duties in line with specified requirements are explained with reference to personal and team safety, impact on the environment, production costs and lost time.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence, of the prescribed type and quality, as specified in this unit standard, that the candidate can achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
