PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the GIS occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GIS skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will have a fundamental understanding of photogrammetry, aerial surveys and associated problems and advantages.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of photographic scale.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of flight planning for aerial photography.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of photo control.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of orientations in photogrammetry.

    Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

    Expression of scale in aerial photographs are understood and explained in the context of the range statement.

    The target area is selected and described relative to the flight planning explained in the context of the range statement.

    A preferred date and time range for aerial photography is determined explained in the context of the range statement.

    Minimum flight lines are calculated from camera characteristics in terms of flight planning explained in the context of the range statement.

    Ground control is planned in accordance of the photojob requirements for aerial triangulation or compilation purposes.
