PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard will be useful to people who aim to achieve career advancement in the GISc area by gaining skills in understanding the processes involved in the capture of Geospatial-information from secondary data sources.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Understand the principles of scanning to capture raster data.
  • Understand the principles of digitising.
  • Understand the principles of Photogrammetry used as a secondary data source for the capture of geo-information.
  • Understand the principles of coordinate geometry in the South African environment. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following outcomes or areas of learning when starting to learn towards this unit standard:
  • Capture Geo-information from secondary data sources under supervision.
  • Supervise the capture of Geo-information from secondary data sources.
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.

    The principles of digitising are understood and can be explained in the context of the range statement.

    Basic principles of stereometric image formation is understood and explained.

    The basic characteristics of aerial sensor systems are understood and explained.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The process whereby coordinate data can be extracted from remotely sensed imagery are understood and explained.

    The basic production steps necessary to complete a photogrammetric project are understood and explained.

    Understand the basic principles of the South African geodetic model as defined by the South African National Mapping organisation.

    Analytic geometry is understood and explained in relation to the capture of spatial data from secondary sources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Documents such as cadastral records, maps, etc. conveying coordinate information are understood in the context as a source for the capture of spatial data. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Including but not limited to:
  • General Plans, survey diagrams, national map series, etc.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Different sets of coordinates are converted to fit different Geographical Information projects in terms of there respective specifications.

    Including but not limited to:
  • Degrees, Minutes and Seconds.
  • Decimal Degrees.
  • Cartesian Coordinates.
  • LO coordinates.
  • Map projections.
