In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard has been developed for the GISc occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GISc skills leading to a qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard is able to perform spatial error analysis.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of positional error.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the spatial quality of data.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the propagation of spatial error.
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze spatial error.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Mathematics at NQF Level 5
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are included with specific outcomes as necessary.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of positional error.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Measures of positional error are understood and explained in relation to spatial error analysis.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to Variance, co-variance matrix, error el-lipse.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Multi-dimensional probability distributions are understood and explained.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to Normal distribution, t-distribution.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Measures of positional error for spatial features are understood and explained.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Point, linear, area, surface.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the spatial quality of data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The relationship between data format and spatial accuracy is understood and explained in relation to spatial error analysis.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Data format refers to precision (real vs. integer).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Sources of random variation are understood, identified and managed in relation to spatial error analysis.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Includes but not limited to instrument accuracy, observation pro-cedure, non systematic spatial distortions, scale, relative vs. absolute ac-curacy, temporal consistency, logical consistency.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Generalization and cartographic license are identified and accounted for in terms of quality of data.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Identify and manage spatial errors leading to propa-gation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Errors due to processing are identified and corrective measures implemented in relation to spatial error analysis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Errors in topological analysis are identified and corrective measures imple-mented in relation to spatial error analysis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Propagation and cascading of errors are identified and explained in relation to spatial error analysis.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
    Perform spatial error analysis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Sensitivity analysis is understood and performed in terms of spatial error analy-sis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Data quality reports are generated and compiled in terms of spatial error analy-sis.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The spatial error in a derived data set is analyzed and reported in terms of spa-tial error analysis.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an as-sessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.

Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accred-ited by the relevant ETQA.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
