PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is useful for people who aim to achieve career advancement in the GIS field and provides them with essential knowledge in relation to practical database design.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Design a database.
  • Explain techniques that can be used to validate data.
  • Understand and explain basic principles related to relational databases.
  • Create a database from a logical design.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in the following:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of general database theory.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Design a simple database for data storage and data manipulation within an integrated geographical information system (GIS).

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Entity relationships are understood and explained in the context of a cartographic/data model designed for a GIS.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Including:
  • One to one.
  • One to many.
  • Many to many.
  • ISA Relationships.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Entity attributes are understood and explained in the context of the cartographic/data model designed for a GIS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The Normalisation process is understood and explained in the context of the cartographic/data model designed for a GIS.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
The first three normal forms must be dealt with in detail. Learners should be superficially introduced to the other normal forms as well.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Diagrammatical conventions used in logical and conceptual models are understood and demonstrated in the context of the cartographic/data model designed for a GIS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Integrity rules are understood and explained in the context of the cartographic/data model designed for a GIS.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including entity integrity and referential integrity.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
A conceptual design is created from user requirements in compliance with GIS standards and specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
A logical design of the database is created from the conceptual model that will offer optimal functionality within the GIS.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Explain techniques that can be used to validate data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Lookup tables are understood and their use illustrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Data input masks are understood and their use illustrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Data validation routines are understood and their use illustrated.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Understand and explain advanced principles related to relational databases used within a GIS environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Versioning is understood and explained in terms of relational databases.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Log transactions are understood and explained in terms of relational databases.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Data backup and recovery is understood and explained in terms of relational databases.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Security issues are understood and explained in terms of relational databases.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Create a database from a logical design within a GIS environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The tables of the database are created from the logical design that will offer optimal functionality in an integrated GIS.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to field, primary keys, relations, and Null values.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The schema for the database is created offering optimal functionality in an integrated GIS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Extra indexes are created as required in accordance with the logical design that will offer optimal functionality in an integrated GIS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Views are created as required from the logical design that will offer optimal functionality in an integrated GIS.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Test data is entered in accordance with the conceptual design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Queries are created in accordance with the conceptual design.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7
The database is tested against the user requirements, modifications are made where needed.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
