PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of mechanical engineering.

Qualifying learners can carry out engineering turning operations with a range of accessories and tools. The results are checked with precision measuring instruments.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain and discuss turning operations.
  • Prepare for turning operations and maintain lathe.
  • Perform turning operations.
  • Finish turning operation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for turning in the engineering machining skills area.

    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to:
  • Operate and monitor a lathe NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Turning operations include but are not limited to different types of thread cutting, turning between centres, screw thread (internal and external), single internal and external tapers, counter balancing on face plate, turning between centres, facing off, drilling, parallel cutting, parting off, boring, hand tapping and reaming, square thread.

    The scope and level of this unit standard is determined by the ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes.

    The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain and discuss turning operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Turning directions are explained to reflect the difference between left and right hand internal and external threads. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The purpose and process of counter balancing a face plate is explained to reflect implications for turning operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The implications of using the incorrect sequence of turning activities, operations and decisions are explained in terms of safety, damage and quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The relationship between gear selection and setting for a specific thread cutting operation is explained in order to cut the required thread. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Gear settings are explained to reflect the differences for multiple start threads. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for turning operations and maintain lathe. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Drawings are interpreted to determine sequence of step by step operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Materials and tools required at workstation are checked in accordance with drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Tools include but not limited to internal and external thread cutting tools, boring bars, cutting tools, chucks, centres, centre drills, drill bits, reamers, counter sinks, select material.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Measuring equipment required for a work piece is selected in accordance with drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but not limited to pitch gauge, micrometers and vernier and dial test indicators.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The different sequence of internal and external operations and left and right hand thread is determined according to the requirement of the specific turning operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Turning speeds and feeds are determined and selected for the different thread cutting operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Required turning accessories/attachments are selected in accordance with the work piece requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accessories/attachments include but not limited to machine tapping and reaming, fixed and travelling steady, taper turning attachment, drilling attachment, jigs.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The work piece is set-up and secured without damage to work piece or machine. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform turning operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different sequence of internal and external operations and left and right hand thread is performed according to the requirement of the specific turning operation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Lathe is monitored while in operation, making adjustments to speeds and feeds where required. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Adjustments include but are not limited to gear ratios, multiple start threads and re-sharpening tools.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Problems are recognised and addressed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Turning operations are performed in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Turning operations are performed in accordance with the dimensions, drawing specifications and the specified tolerances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The maximum tolerance is +- 0,05 mm.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Finish turning operation. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Finishing includes but is not limited to apply quality checks, take corrective action and report on operations.

    Quality checks are applied to ensure that the finished component meets specified requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Job and time sheets are completed in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Housekeeping requirements are met in accordance with workplace procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Housekeeping requirements include but are not limited to clean and tidy work environment, storing, cleaning.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Incidents reflecting changes or unsafe conditions during turning operation are addressed in accordance with workplace and occupational health and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reporting requirements are met in accordance with workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.

    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and be a subject matter expert in this learning area and at least have 3 years experience in the skills specific area.

    The learner can be assessed against this unit standard to obtain credits or as part of an integrated assessment for a qualification:
