PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of mechanical engineering.

Qualifying learners can carry out engineering grinding operations and check the results with precision measuring instruments.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Explain and discuss surface grinding processes.
  • Grind work piece square.
  • Grind angles.
  • Grind component on cylindrical grinding machine. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for grinding in the engineering machining skills area.

    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to:
  • Operate and monitor a surface grinding machine at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and level of this unit standard is limited to common commercial rubber applications and is determined by the ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes.

    The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain and discuss surface grinding processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The principle operation, function and processes of the cylindrical grinding machine is explained to reflect understanding of different machine types. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Principle operation includes internal and external grinding.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The difference in operating procedures is discussed to reflect taper, radius and form grinding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The principle operation, function and purpose of the different grinding wheels are explained to reflect understanding of different types. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Different grinding wheels of both internal and external grinding include but are not limited to tungsten carbide and silicon carbide wheels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The implications of using the incorrect sequence of cylindrical grinding activities, operations and decisions are explained in terms of safety, damage and quality. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Cylindrical grinding feeds are explained in terms of the formula charts used for different materials in accordance with requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Grind work piece square. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Work piece materials may include both non-ferrous and ferrous metals and alloys.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preparation activities are undertaken to grind the work piece square. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation activities include but are not limited to dressing the wheel and clamping the job on magnetic chuck, stroke length is set, sharpen and shape grinding wheels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measuring equipment is selected to enable inspection against drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but is not limited to micrometer, depth micrometer, vernier, Johnson slip gauges, sine bar.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The work piece is ground in accordance with drawing specifications including tolerances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The block is measured utilising the selected measuring equipment to reflect the requirements of the drawing. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Grind angles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preparation activities are undertaken to grind angles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation activities include but are not limited to dressing the wheel and clamping the job on magnetic table, clocking sine bar parallel to machine head, stroke length is set, sharpen and shape grinding wheels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sine table is used to calculate the required angle in accordance with drawing specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Johnson slip gauges are used to maintain the required height during the process of grinding. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Measuring equipment is selected to enable inspection against drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but is not limited to height gauge, dial indicator, vernier, Johnson slip gauges, sine bar and/or vice, protractor.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Angles are ground in accordance with drawing specifications including tolerances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Angles are measured utilising the selected measuring equipment to reflect the requirements of the drawing. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Grind component on cylindrical grinding machine. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    The range of grinding operations must include internal and external cylindrical grinding, grinding taper, form grinding and radius. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preparation activities are undertaken to use cylindrical grinding machine for internal and external grinding. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Preparation activities include but are not limited to dressing the wheel and clamping the job in chuck or expanding mandrel, clocking, stroke length is set, safety requirements, setting speeds and feeds, taper and radius, sharpen and shape grinding wheels.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Measuring equipment for external grinding is selected to enable inspection against drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but is not limited to micrometers, depth micrometer, radius gauges.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The diameter of the component is ground in accordance with drawing specifications including tolerances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The diameter of the component is measured utilising the selected measuring equipment to reflect the requirements of the drawing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The external wheel is dressed to grind face of component to required length. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Measuring equipment for internal grinding is selected to enable inspection against drawing specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring equipment includes but is not limited to telescopic gauges, inside micrometers, depth micrometer, micrometer, radius gauges, internal taper.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The internal diameter of the component is ground in accordance with drawing specifications including tolerances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    The internal wheel is dressed to grind face of component to required length. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    The inside diameter of the component is measured utilising the selected measuring equipment to reflect the requirements of the drawing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 10 
    Equipment and machine is cleaned and equipment is stored in accordance with workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.

    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and be a subject matter expert in this learning area and at least have 3 years experience in the skills specific area.
