PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard are required by people in the field of engineering machining.

Qualifying learners can shape and sharpen tools and cutters for use in engineering machining operations. The results are checked with precision measuring instruments.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Prepare and set machine for grinding activity.
  • Perform tool and cutter grinding operations.
  • Apply quality checks on machined tool/cutter. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This unit standard has been designed as part of a progression. It is one of a series of unit standards for grinding in the engineering machining skills area.

    The credits allocated to this unit standard assume that a learner has already learned to:
  • Produce components by performing engineering grinding operations NQF Level 3.

  • The scope and level of this unit standard is limited to common commercial rubber applications and is determined by the ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare and set machine for grinding activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Drawings and job instructions are interpreted to determine sequence of operations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tools and drill bits are selected and inspected for defects to facilitate sharpening process. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Charts and tables are interpreted in order to sharpen different drill for different materials types. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Machine is prepared for operation including lubrication, routine maintenance and pre-operational checks. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Accessories are selected and installed to secure drill in accordance with legal and safety requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Grinding wheels are prepared to ensure that the grinding operation will meet drawing specifications.

    Perform tool and cutter grinding operations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Tools and cutters for grinding covered in this standard must include side and face cutters; end mill; form relieved milling cutters; flat, vee and circular form tools and hobs; drills and reamers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Grinding machine is start up and shut down according to procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Tool and cutter grinding operations is performed according to chart. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Machined tool/cutter is removed on completion of grinding process and inspected in accordance with chart specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Measuring equipment is utilised to test whether grinding operations meet specified tolerances. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Measuring instruments include verniers, micrometers and dial gauges.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Problems are recognised and addressed in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Grinding operations are performed in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Health and safety requirements include the use of guards, correct coolants and appropriate personal protective equipment.

    Component is finished in accordance with quality and drawing specifications.

    Testing methods are utilised to ensure that machined tool/cutter reflects specified tolerances.

    Reporting requirements are met in accordance with workplace procedures.

    Equipment and machine is cleaned and stored in accordance with workplace procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    The assessment will be governed by the policies and guidelines of the relevant Education and Training Quality Assuror (ETQA) that has jurisdiction over this field of learning.

    The assessor will (at the very least) be accredited and have a relevant qualification and be a subject matter expert in this learning area and at least have 3 years experience in the skills specific area.
