In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard has been developed for the GISc occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GISc skills leading to qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will have a basic understanding of GIS data structures for the purpose of data capture.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Use a prescribed spatial reference framework to set up a data capture environment.
  • Use the appropriate feature type when capturing data.
  • Understand basic theory and principles of spatial data models used in data capture.

Specific range statements are provided in the body of the unit standard where they apply to particular specific outcomes or assessment criteria.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following:
  • Basic Computer Literacy.
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 5.
  • Internet Browsing and Searching Skills.
  • Unit Standard Demonstrate understanding of the basic concepts of databases and the ability to plan and create a simple database.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Range statements are included with specific outcomes as necessary.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Use a prescribed spatial reference framework to set up a data capture environment.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Spatial reference framework refers to projections, coordinate systems and datums used in South Africa.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The appropriate projection for a GIS project is chosen according to data capture requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to Gauss Conform, Lamberts, Albers Equal Area, UTM.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The projection environment is set up according to the projection parameters.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Reading coordinates from, and plotting coordinates on a paper map are demonstrated in the context of the data capture environment.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Cartesian XY, Eastings and Northings, South African LO YX, Latitudes and Longitudes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The appropriate datum for data capture is used in accordance with task requirements.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Including but not limited to WGS 84, Clarke 1880.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Use the appropriate feature type when capturing data.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Simple feature types are defined and used to portray aspects of the real world.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Points, lines, polygons.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The use of complex feature types to portray aspects of the real world is understood and explained in the context of GIS data structures.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
    Networks, surfaces.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Unique feature identifiers are assigned in accordance with organisational data models.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Understand theory and principles of spatial data models used in data capture.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The differences between raster and vector data models are understood and explained in terms of GIS data structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The differences between the spaghetti and the topology vector data models are understood and explained in terms of GIS data structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Basic theory and principles associated with using a layer model for data capturing are understood and explained in terms of GIS data structures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Basic theory and principles associated with using the feature model for data capturing are understood and explained in terms of GIS data structures.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance. Where direct assessment of knowledge is required, assessment criteria have been included in the body of the unit standard.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES
    Terminology:
  • Spaghetti Data model: This refers to a data model where data is stored in a way that no relationships between feature instances are recorded, resulting in extensive duplication of ordinate values.
  • Topology Data model: This refers to a data model where data is stored with relationships between feature instances recorded, resulting in no duplication of ordinate values.

    Notes to Assessors:
  • The assumption is that learners have already been introduced to projections on a conceptual level. Through this unit standard the learner is introduced to the concepts in more detail, within an applied project environment.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
