PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard has been developed for the GIS occupational area and is intended for persons who aim to achieve career advancement by gaining GIS skills leading to qualification based on unit standards. A person who has successfully completed this unit standard will have a basic understanding of how a hand held GPS works, how accurate it is and how to capture field data using such a device.

A person credited with this unit standard is able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the GPS satellite system.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how a GPS calculates position.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of errors in GPS positions. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The credit calculation is based on the assumption that learners are already competent in terms of the following:
  • Datums, Projections, Co-ordinate Systems.
  • All Spatial Awareness Unit Standards.
  • Communication at NQF Level 5.
  • Maths Literacy at NQF Level 5.

    The role of accurate clocks for the GPS system is understood and explained in the context of positioning.

    The role of the ephimeres of the GPS satellite constellation is understood and explained in the context of positioning.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or will assess this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
  • Therefore anyone wishing to be assessed against this unit standard may apply to be assessed by any assessment agency, assessor or provider institution that is accredited by the relevant ETQA. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    Essential embedded knowledge will be assessed through assessment of the specific outcomes in terms of the stipulated assessment criteria. Candidates are unlikely to achieve all the specific outcomes, to the standards described in the assessment criteria, without knowledge of the listed embedded knowledge. This means that for the most part, the possession or lack of the knowledge can be directly inferred from the quality of the candidate's performance.   • Tropospheric: The lowest atmospheric layer; from 4 to 11 miles high (depending on latitude).
