PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The person credited with this unit standard is able to analyse the systems performance in order to determine which components are malfunctioning so that the cause of the recurring faults can be identified. Learners will also be able to identify remedial recommendations to prevent reoccurrence and then to communicate these to the relevant role players.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying the cause of reoccurring faults applicable to specific equipment.
  • Making remedial recommendations.
  • Recording and report on performance of system.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
Learners accessing this Qualification will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.
  • Communication at NQF Level 4 or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
Signalling systems up to component level includes but is not limited to power supplies, fail safe data transfer, remote control, interlocking, condition monitoring and train detection.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify the cause of reoccurring faults applicable to specific equipment.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Specific equipment may include but is not limited to train detection systems, remote control systems, condition monitoring, interlocking systems, power equipment, train number systems, fail-safe data transfer systems and rail bound telecoms.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Database of reoccurring faults is scrutinised in order to identify root cause.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Systems performance is analysed to determine which components are malfunctioning.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Specific reoccurring faults are located on specific equipment in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
The cause of the reoccurring fault is identified and explained in order to inform remedial actions.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Make remedial recommendations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Database history is analysed in order to determine maintenance or component design failure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Maintenance or design types of remedial recommendations are identified in order to prevent reoccurrence.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Report is compiled and communicated according to organisational policy and procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Record and report on performance of system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Types of equipment failure are sorted in order to determine root cause of failure.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Technical report is compiled according to organisational policy and procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Report is communicated to relevant roleplayers according to organisational communications procedures.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
