PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for individuals dealing with the provision of advice and the selling and promotion of hair care products/product ranges through customer interaction in a retail environment.

Individuals credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge applicable to hair care in order to add value to customer service in the retail environment, through the identification of most appropriate products, the correct communication of product features, benefits, use and application according to client/customer needs, based on the analysis of the individuals hair care requirements, hair type and condition.

Product as well as cosmetology knowledge gained will enable effective problem solving, trouble-shooting and the addressing of customer needs in accordance with the standard operational procedures and specifications of the product manufacturer and the organisation.

    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Products may include but are not limited to shampoos, conditioners, combination products, hair repair or maintenance products, hair colourants, gels, mousse, waxes, hairspray, specialist shampoos for dandruff or lice infestation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Customers' hair types, condition, colouring and requirements are assessed in order to provide appropriate advice as it relates to individual's circumstances. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Referrals and the need for third party interventions are communicated if and where required following organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Specific hair care products suitable to the individual's hair type, condition and hair care regime are recommended according to customer needs.

    Use and application of hair care products are explained according to manufacturer's requirements. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance (ETQA) body.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in the specific outcomes of the unit standard as well as the integrated competence described in the purpose of the unit standard.

  • The anatomical strucure of hair include the outer layer or cuticle, cortex, medulla, scales, hair-shaft, hair root, follicles, impact of root structure on hair texture, pigmentation(black red and yellow).
  • Hair types include dry, oily, normal and combinations.
  • Hair texture includes: thin, thick, straight, curly.
  • Hair conditions include healthy versus chemical trauma including permed, straightened, coloured and bleached hair requiring specific hair care products.
  • Hair abnormalities include dandruff, alopecia areata, eczema, and hair-lice.
  • Basic steps in hair care include brushing and combing, washing, conditioning, drying, styling, over the counter special treatments such as oil treatments and hair masks.
  • Use of products include the correct use and application of products, frequency of use, benefits of products, potential effects of specific product types when utilised incorrectly.
  • Referrals within the context of this unit standard needs to take place in the event of dermatological, scalp specific or other specialist interventions for abnormalities where over-the counter products are inappropriate or will be ineffective.
  • Identification to specific hair care products should incorporate skin type (scalp), condition, texture, age, colouring, individual needs and requirements, individual budget and product ranges available.
