PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Each learner must know how to accurately verify cash and chips and be able to perform buy-ins and cash-outs for customers. The individual must understand the impact on the organisation if this is not done accurately, as well as the importance of dealing with customers promptly and efficiently.

In particular, on completion of this unit standard, the learner is able to:
  • Handle chips correctly.
  • Handle cash and vouchers correctly.
  • Describe the possible impact of not verifying cash and checking for forgeries.
  • Check and operate floats accurately.
  • Ensure good customer service.

    The typical scope and context of this unit standard is the operating of a chip and cash float within any casino in South Africa.

    Check the opening and return floats. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The opening and return floats are checked to ensure accuracy in line with relevant company procedure and Gaming board requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Variances encountered when checking float are reported immediately according to company procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The importance of opening the position quickly is explained in accordance with company policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The importance of having more than one person sign for the accuracy of the opening and closing float inventories is explained focusing on the consequences of not having more than one person sign. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Adequate float levels and mix of notes and tokens are maintained according to business requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Provincial Gaming Board requirements and company procedures when dealing with float control are explained with examples of practical implementation.

    The use of each type of chip is demonstrated correctly and an explanation given of its purpose.

    Appropriate measures are taken when presented with "foreign" chips.

    Forged chips are identified and an explanation given of how they have to be dealt with.

    Customers are cashed out accurately and quickly.

    An explanation is given of the importance of checking and reconciling the cash before handing it to the customer.

  • Cashing out includes but is not limited to all chip varieties, vouchers/promotional value items.

    Various ways in which cash is verified and forgeries are checked is described according to company procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Coins and tokens are exchanged and an explanation given of the importance of checking and reconciling the cash received from the customer.

    A customer is cashed out and an explanation given of the importance of checking and reconciling the value before handing it to the customer. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Cash buy-ins are recorded and an explanation is given of the importance of attaching the customer's name to the cash. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The efficient dealing of customer queries and payouts is explained in terms of the impact on the organization.

    The importance of checking the opening and closing floats is stressed with emphasis placed on reporting variances immediately.

    Having more than one person sign the opening and closing cashier float reconciliation sheets is insisted upon in alignment with company policy and procedure.
