PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the Safety in Society and Sovereignty of the State sub-fields who are required to conduct search and sweep operations of an area or premises. This unit standard will enable learners to understand and affect the different types of search methods and evacuation procedures of persons within the area or premises. The leaner be able to utilise different resources in order to enhance safety measures during searching and sweeping operations.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Apply searching and sweeping methods.
  • Evacuate an area or premises.
  • Describe the utilisation of different resources in a search and sweep. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • The Unit Standard "Conduct planning, briefing and debriefing sessions" at NQF Level 4.

    Apply searching and sweeping methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of the different types of searching methods in terms of their advantages, disadvantages and safety principles and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A demonstration is given of the utilisation of the different types of searching methods in predetermined staged scenarios. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Predetermined staged scenarios refer to but are not limited to at lease five scenarios which include at lease one search method per scenario.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Evacuate an area or premises. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An explanation is given of the different types of evacuation procedures in terms of the threat level. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Dangers related to evacuation procedures are assessed in order to inform actions to be taken during evacuation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The area or premises are evacuated in order to assess the evacuation plans effectiveness in terms of threat levels, related dangers and evacuation procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Procedures also refer to the procedures as contained in the contingency plan.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of the procedures to be followed in the absence of contingency plans. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An evacuation plan is developed to suite the type of evacuation required.

    Describe the utilisation of different resources in a search and sweep.

    A debriefing report is compiled with recommendation on the improved utilisation of resources.

    A debriefing is conducted with all stakeholders and role players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The different types of resources are utilised according to organisational policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An explanation is given of the different types of resources available to search and sweep operations in terms of their roles and functions.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
