PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard is for learners within the Safety in Society and Sovereignty of the State sub-fields who work in the bomb disposal environment and who are required to identify, design and build Improvised Explosive Devices. Learners will further be able to use these competencies during later learning to dispose of Improvised Explosive Devises during bomb disposal situations. The competencies achieved in this Unit Standard will lead to a safer society for South African citizens.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Describe Improvised Explosive Devices.
  • Design an Improvised Explosive Device.
  • Construct an Improvised Explosive Device.

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4.
  • The Unit Standard "Identify and explain switches and or triggering devises" at NQF Level 5.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
    Describe Improvised Explosive Devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A description is given of Improvised Explosive Devices in terms of their functioning and applications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Types of Improvised Explosive Devices are identified according to specialised publications.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Types refer but are not limited to victim operated bombs, vehicle bombs and small and medium sized Improvised Explosive Devices.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
A description is given of the components of Improvised Explosive Devices in terms of their functions and positions in the firing train.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Components refer but are not limited to switches, initiator, explosive charge, containers and power sources.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Design an Improvised Explosive Device.
    OUTCOME NOTES
Learners must design at least one Improvised Explosive Devices using at least five different switches. Each one of these five switches other than the arming switch must be able to activate the device independently.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
A description is given of constructing techniques in terms of their limitations, advantages and disadvantages.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
A diagram for an Improvised Explosive Device is drawn up which applies a combination electronic, mechanical and chemical principles and properties.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
  • Electronic principles refer but are not limited to micro-electronics, electric circuits, power sources and electronic components.
  • Mechanical principles refer but are not limited to leverage principles, metal fatigue, pressure, pressure release and pull.
  • Chemical properties refer but are not limited to corrosiveness and chemical reactions.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Components are selected according to their uses and functions.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Components refer to but are not limited to switches, power sources, wiring and containers.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
    Construct an Improvised Explosive Device.
    OUTCOME NOTES
Learners must build at least one Improvised Explosive Devices using at least five different switches. Each one of these five switches other than the arming switch must be able to activate the device independently.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The Improvised Explosive Device is constructed according to the drawn up diagram.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
The Improvised Explosive Devices is tested for functionality.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
An explanation is given of fault finding procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Equipment is used according to its uses and applications.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Equipment refers but is not limited pliers, soldering irons, multi-metres and circuit testers.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
