PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners within the Safety in Society and Sovereignty of the State sub-fields who work in the bomb disposal environment and who are required to dispose of and or neutralise explosive devices such as Improvised Explosive Devices and Explosive Ordinance Devices and suspect articles.

Learners will be able to use bomb disposal equipment and will understand how to handle forensic evidence that will be collected at a scene. This unit standard will enable learners to control incident scene to enable disposal activities in a safe environment therefore leading to a safer society for South African citizens.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Analyse bomb disposal techniques.
  • Use bomb disposal equipment.
  • Prepare the charges.
  • Dispose of bombs.

    It is assumed that the learner has the following knowledge and skills:
  • Communication at NQF Level 4.
  • Physical Science at NQF Level 4.
  • The Unit Standard "Apply explosives tactically for the breaching of obstacles" at NQF Level 5.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Bomb disposal techniques are assessed in terms of their advantages, disadvantages and limitations. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Techniques refer to but are not limited to hand entry techniques, disruption techniques and controlled detonation.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A selected bomb disposal technique is justified according to a given situation. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Use bomb disposal equipment. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Equipment may refer to but is not limited to remote operated vehicles, X-ray machines, disrupters, endoscopes and personal protection equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of bomb disposal equipment in terms of its operating principles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An explanation is given of the use of bomb disposal equipment according to their application. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Bomb disposal equipment is tested to determine its working condition.

    Prepare the charges. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A description is given of formulas applicable to the design of the charge. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Formulas refer but are not limited to the calculations to determine Misnay, Shardon and Munro effect.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The charge is designed and assembled according to the type of charge to be used determined when selecting the bomb disposal technique.

    Dispose of bombs. 
    OUTCOME NOTES 
    Learners must demonstrate the use of at least five different bomb disposal techniques. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Bombs refers to only Improvised Explosive Devices, Explosive Ordnance Devices and suspect articles.

    The environment is secured to ensure safety.

    The suspected bomb is assessed in order to identify the applicable bomb disposal technique.

    The bomb disposal technique is applied to dispose of the suspected bomb.

    The correct bomb disposal equipment is applied during the disposal. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Exhibits and possible forensic evidence is secured to maintain their integrity for investigation purposes.

    Post bomb disposal functions are performed in line with operating procedures.
