This unit standard will be useful to people who are responsible for positioning conveyances by means of clutching. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Explain the specific requirements regarding the clutching of a winder.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Explain the specific requirements regarding the clutching of a winder. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The prohibition of the loading of men, material, explosives and minerals into the conveyance when clutching a winder and the consequences to occupational health and safety, if requirements are not adhered to, are explained in legal, site-specific and operational terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The sequence to be followed when clutching a winder is explained in terms of occupational health and safety, legal, site-specific and operational terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The consequences of not adhering to the sequence of clutching are explained in terms of occupational health and safety, legal, site-specific and operational terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The principles of operating a winder in the clutching process are explained in legal, site-specific and operational terms. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The signals to be used and their sequence in clutching, in which it will be used in the clutching process are explained in legal, site-specific and operational terms.

    Prepare to clutch a winder. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The required personal protective equipment is used in accordance with available, operational, fit for purpose, and used in accordance with its design and legal, site-specific and operational requirements. Same as above. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The signals received and their sequence are understood and reacted to in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The conveyances are positioned on the correct marks and the brake holding power is tested, in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The backlash of the drum about to be moved is picked up, in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The consequences of not adhering to occupational health, safety whilst preparing to and clutching the winder, are explained in terms of legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences must include those for the following:
  • Using defective or not using personal protective equipment.
  • Using incorrect signals and not reacting correctly on signals received.
  • Not positioning the conveyances in accordance with specified requirements and not testing the holding power of the brakes.
  • Not picking up the backlash.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The winder is clutched and positioned in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specified requirements must include the following:
  • Disengagement of the clutch of the stationary drum.
  • Controlling of the clutched drum.
  • Engagement of the clutch of the stationary drum.
  • Testing of the brake holding power.
  • Transmitting clutching complete signal.

    A trial run is performed if necessary and the conveyance is returned to the originator, in accordance with legal, site-specific and operational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    Interpersonal interaction is conducted in a positive consistent manner with specific requirements that promotes effective teamwork. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Reports are completed and submitted in the required format to designated personnel in terms of site-specific requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consequences must include those for the following:
  • Incorrect disengagement of the stationary drum.
  • Incorrect controlling of the clutched drum.
  • Incorrect testing and failure to test the holding power of the brakes.

    Notes to Assessors:

    Assessors should keep the following principles in mind when designing and conducting assessments against this unit standard:
  • Focus the assessment activities on gathering evidence in terms of the main outcome expressed in the title to ensure assessment is integrated rather than fragmented. Remember, we want to declare the person competent in terms of the title. Where assessment at title level is unmanageable, then focus assessment around each specific outcome, or groups of specific outcomes.
  • Make sure evidence is gathered across the entire range, wherever it applies. Assessment activities should be as close to the real performance as possible, and where simulations or role-plays are used, there should be supporting evidence to show the candidate is able to perform in the real situation.
  • Do not focus the assessment activities on each assessment criterion. Rather make sure the assessment activities focus on outcomes and are sufficient to enable evidence to be gathered around all the assessment criteria.
  • The assessment criteria provide the specifications against which assessment judgements should be made. In most cases, knowledge can be inferred from the quality of the performances, but in other cases, knowledge and understanding will have to be tested through questioning techniques. Where this is required, there will be assessment criteria to specify the standard required.
  • The task of the assessor is to gather sufficient evidence of the prescribed type and quality as specified in this unit standard that the candidate is able to achieve the outcomes again and again and again. This means assessors will have to judge how many repeat performances are required before they believe the performance is reproducible.
  • All assessments should be conducted in line with the following well-documented principles of assessment, namely appropriateness, fairness, manageability, integration into work or learning, validity, direct, authentic, sufficient, systematic, open and consistent.
