PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard enables individuals to issue prescribed medicines to a patient in accordance with legislative and regulatory constraints. Upon completion of this unit standard individuals will be able to deal with patients, specifically providing information on issued medicines. They will further be able to select, package, label and where necessary prepare medicines for issuing. In addition the individuals will be able to complete all administrative tasks related to the issuing of medicines.

It is assumed the learner is competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The legality and authenticity of the prescription are verified in terms of legal requirements and details of the prescriber and patient. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Non-valid prescriptions are checked with the supervising Pharmacist. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Authorisation to issue is obtained in accordance with legal, organisational and facility procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The contents of the prescription are checked for validity within the terms of reference of the facility and the organisation.

    Select, package and label medicines.

    The legal requirements related to the selection, packaging and labelling of medicines are described according to current legislation.
