PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The qualifying learner will be able to read and interpret data from a range of electronic equipment to measure, relay and record information relating to quality and quantity of water and wastewater. Learners will be able to monitor the status of the water and wastewater treatment process by looking at information on computer screens including warning messages and data logger. This unit standard will benefit learners in that it creates portability to enable the learner to use the skills obtained in the chemical manufacturing and production fields. This will ensure that the work is economically operated and maintained according to work specifications. This competence will equip the learner with skills that are portable into other sectors thus enhancing the employability of the learner in both the water sector and other industry related jobs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Faults are identified in order to determine the necessary corrective action.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Corrective action refers to but is not limited to self-repair/fixing or referral to a qualified technician.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
Incorrect readings are identified and recorded for corrective actions and reporting purpose.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5
Situations when it is necessary to override the automated systems are identified and explained with examples.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6
Conversion of feedback units to reporting units is explained with examples.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Perform basic routine maintenance for electronic equipment according to operating instructions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Inaccuracy in readings is recognised and recorded in accordance with works procedures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Demonstrate ability to control the process manually using the SCADA system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
An ability to log on and off on the SCADA system is demonstrate by using the keys and individual password on the system.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Processes that can be controlled via the SCADA system are identified and described in order to demonstrated how processes can be operated from the desk.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
An ability to override the system is demonstrated in order to increase or decrease a parameter.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
An ability to accept the alarm from the system is demonstrated in order to take corrective action.
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE
Corrective action is limited to manually adjusting the process which will allow the alarm to be cancelled and to report the problem to the technician for repair. Troubleshooting in this instance refers to establishing the operational corrective action necessary to deal with the alarm condition.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessment and moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the ETQA`s policies and guidelines for assessment and moderation.
  • Moderation must include both internal and external moderation of assessments at exit points of the qualification, unless ETQA policies specify otherwise.
  • Moderation should also encompass achievement of the competence described both in individual unit standards as well as the integrated competence described in the qualification.

    REREGISTRATION HISTORY
As per the SAQA Board decision/s at that time, this unit standard was Reregistered in 2012; 2015.

This unit standard replaces unit standard 12066, "Operate telemetric and electronic equipment and scientific instrumentation", Level 4, 12 credits.

    Integrated Assessment:

When conducting assessments, assessors must ensure that they are familiar with the full text of the unit standards being assessed. Assessors must ensure that the assessment covers the specific outcomes, critical cross-field outcomes and essential embedded knowledge by developing assessment activities and tools, which are appropriate to the contexts in which the learners are working. These activities and tools may include self-assessment, peer assessment, formative and summative assessment. It may be more effective and efficient to assess a number of unit standards together in an integrated way, thus reducing the overall number of assessments and ensuring that commonalities that exist between a number of unit standards are captured in a way that makes sense for assessment.

    Assessment Option:

Learners could be assessed using the following methods:
  • Oral or written questions.
  • Observation.
  • Simulation.
  • Product sample reports.

This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
