PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will have the capacity to perform water rescues which involve contact with a single patient, as well as those rescues that are non-contact. All demands a high degree of physical, mental and moral fitness. This ability is necessary in order to manage a variety of rescues in a range of circumstances. With increased use by the public of our often dangerous coastal aquatic environment, and the use of open water for canoeing and sailing, the importance of such flexible capability is clear.

The unit standard can consequently be expected to benefit the sub-field greatly and enhance the range of skills of lifeguards whose duty lies with the provision of adaptable services.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Identify the various types of rescues and the equipment used in the appropriate circumstances.
  • Demonstrate and explain the use of the various rescue methods.
  • Demonstrate and explain the use of the various release methods used in contact rescues.
  • Evaluate personal performance.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3.
  • Basic lifeguarding skills.
  • Swimming ability as required by the International Life Saving to which Life Saving South Africa is affiliated.

    The various non-contact rescues are undertaken with a patient in an aquatic environment.

    Demonstrate and explain the use of the various release methods used in contact rescues.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Factors of location, environment, speed, risk and physical and other differences between rescuer and patient in making the choice of a rescue type are explained so as to aid improved rescues in future. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal performance is analysed and the choice of a method is stified in terms of a particular context. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A programme is proposed to achieve performance improvement.
