PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will have the capacity to work within the relevant legislation, policies and guidelines affecting the work of a service organisation. A sound understanding of the organisational framework of policies, and the regulations within which the organisation works, leads to a better understanding of the roles of the self as well as others, with ultimate benefit to the organisation as a whole. Efficiency of the organisation is thus well served. The unit standard can consequently be expected to benefit the sub-field greatly and enhance operational capacity and understanding of personnel whose duty lies with the provision of adaptable services.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:

  • Identify legislation that relates directly to the operation of the organisation.
  • Interpret relevant legislation and guidelines.

    Understand the Constitution and bye-laws of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A copy of the relevant documents relating to the organisation's Constitution, or similar founding document, and bye-laws is accessed and reviewed in order to gather relevant information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An organogram of the organisation is constructed based on own experience of the structures in action. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The roles and authorities of the various management levels in the structure are explained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The differences between legislation, rules and guidelines are explained. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Identify legislation that relates directly to the operation of the organisation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The bodies whose regulations and guidelines apply to the organisation are listed and major issues highlighted. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A directory of names, postal addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, contact names for these bodies is produced. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A manual of copies of most recent legislation applicable to the organisation is developed for reference purposes.

    Interpret relevant legislation and guidelines.

    Three examples of legislation affecting the organisation are explained in writing. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The effect that these items have or will have on the operation of the organisation is analysed and described. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A general circulation notice to all relevant personnel is written for three of these items.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed against this unit standard (including through RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), or one with an appropriate memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the relevant ETQA.
