PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner achieving this unit standard will be able to take relevant practical steps necessary to manage threats and incidents affecting organised aquatic activities such as galas, sports events, competitions, promotions and school outings that take place in an aquatic environment. The learner will be operating independently from a trained lifeguarding duty squad. In doing so, he/she will liaise with all role-players who might affect the services provided including backup services, in an endeavour to ensure optimum safety. The training of a sufficient number of lifeguards to perform the function of ensuring optimum safety at a variety of organised aquatic activities provides a versatile resource to the benefit of the public. This in turn can be expected to benefit the sub-field greatly.

On achievement of this unit standard the learner will understand and be able to:
  • Position the aquatic activity area to maximise safety.
  • Prepare to react to any incidents arising during the programme of activities.
  • Respond to incidents effectively.

    Position the aquatic activity area to maximise safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The potential hazards that could affect a specific event are identified in order to ensure the correct siting of the event to ensure maximum participant and spectator safety. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Aspects of general water awareness and quality that are taken into account when deciding on the location of the organised activity are discussed with reference to organisational policy and legislation. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The activity site is selected to the satisfaction of major stakeholders. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Particular attention is paid to safety where competitive events are included. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Essential safety equipment is identified and ensured to be in place. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Contact is established with backup services and they are briefed in advance regarding a particular aquatic activity. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare to react to incidents arising during the programme of activities.

    Possible types of incidents are identified in relation to a particular aquatic activity. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment which may be required during a safety incident is prepared and made available before the commencement of the activity.

    Constant surveillance and scanning of activities is undertaken throughout the programme.

    Isolate slippery areas, isolate or repair faulty equipment, check weather conditions including the possibility of lightning, test communication equipment, note and deal with threats from wildlife, optimise safe water conditions.

    Respond to incidents. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Any incident is noted and an initial appraisal done rapidly in accordance with acceptable procedure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A course of action to respond to an incident is decided upon inn accordance with general practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Priorities are identified and support provided in response to a particular incident. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Airways, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, prevent further injury, manage other injuries.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Stabilisation of the patient is achieved through proper medically-related activities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An effective hand-over to support services is achieved and a briefing given.

    Steps are taken to ensure no recurring incidents or injuries.

    Equipment is reinstated and remaining activities are closely monitored.
